I now exclusively use hire vans meaning I can always pick the best vehicle for the job.
In Devon I usually use a Transit Jumbo XLWB van (as below) which is the longest Transit, but still a standard width, so it has a good combination of load volume and accessibility.
As a frequent business-use hirer, the rate I get has made me more competitive: the hire cost within the quote simply replaces the amount that used to cover running costs.
Other advantages include having recent modern vehicles; all maintenance is dealt with for me by the hire company, any issues rectified regardless (ultimately the hire company simply issue a replacement vehicle if there is a problem that cannot be resolved).

The enormous Ford Transit Jumbo XLWB
Or a Luton van has that bit more space, and a tailift for big or heavy items
Or a SWB Transit for small loads or difficult access / sharp corners

I can also hire flat bed or dropside open vans which are great for awkward or unusual loads eg loading by crane (up to 1075kg load)
